How does a Nuclear Bone Scan work?
A nuclear bone scan works by using a small amount of radioactive tracer that is injected into a vein and carried through the bloodstream to the bones. Areas with increased bone activity, such as sites of injury, inflammation, or disease, absorb more of the tracer and appear brighter on imaging. After the tracer has circulated, a specialized gamma camera detects the radiation it emits and produces detailed images that highlight changes in bone metabolism and structure, helping radiologists pinpoint potential concerns.

What happens during a Nuclear Bone Scan?
During the exam, patients first receive the tracer injection and then wait several hours to allow it to distribute throughout the skeletal system. Once imaging begins, the patient lies comfortably on a scanning table while the camera slowly moves over the body to capture images. The scan itself is painless and typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. Afterward, patients can resume normal activities and are encouraged to drink fluids to help flush the tracer from their system.
How do I prepare for a Nuclear Bone Scan?
The specific test that you are having will determine the preparation required. Be sure to review the instructions given by the ZP representative, as well as your doctor, when scheduling your appointment. Some procedures require that you fast, while others require no special preparation at all.

What happens after a Nuclear Bone Scan?
Increase your fluid intake for the next 24 hours to help flush the radiopharmaceutical out of your system. Depending on the type of exam, you may be required to stop breastfeeding or limit your contact with pregnant women, small children, and pets.
