What is Bone Suppression X-ray?

Bone Suppression X-ray is a special software technology that removes the bony structures within the chest and eliminates any obstruction of the lung field. This is performed by a computer algorithm that generates a secondary image without the need for any additional exposures. All chest X-rays throughout Zwanger-Pesiri locations will now include Bone Suppression.

Bone Suppression has proven to be a useful tool for the radiologist in order to cross reference with the routine chest images and ensure there are no findings that otherwise wouldn’t be as easily detected.

This imaging technology greatly increases conspicuity of pulmonary findings, including:

  • lung nodules
  • pneumonia
  • the earliest stages of lung carcinomas

The example below demonstrates a routine chest radiograph paired with the processed bone suppressed image.

In this example below, the bone suppressed image demonstrated a metastatic finding in the upper pole of the right lung.

This initial finding subsequently gave way to follow up imaging that helped better approach and manage the patient’s course of treatment. The finding on the bone suppression is better characterized on a CT Chest (left) and PET exam (right) as shown below.
