3D Mammography

3D mammography, otherwise known as digital breast tomosynthesis, is an innovation in breast screening, producing images of breast tissue using X-rays. Mammography captures multiple images segments, or ‘slices’ of the breast at different angles before constructing them into three-dimensional images that are capable of showing more detail, and increases the ability to find smaller cancers that may be obscured by the “overlapping” of breast tissue on a traditional mammogram.

This advanced form of mammograms offer improved detection for women with dense breasts. Dense breast tissue can mask cancers and make them harder to be detected by traditional mammography. Using 3D mammography makes it easier for doctors to catch breast cancer early in addition to helping doctors catch more cancers. Further, breast tomosynthesis allows radiologists to see the cancer size much better than they would be on a regular mammogram, reducing the chances of doctors seeing a false positive.

3D mammograms release the same amount of radiation as a traditional mammogram, being no greater risk to the patient. Zwanger-Pesiri uses machines that feature C-view technology, taking images from a 3D mammogram and instantly renders them into 2D versions. This provides radiologists with two sets of images from one exam, exposing women to 40% less radiation than a traditional combination view.

Breast Ultrasound

A breast ultrasound uses sound waves to make a picture of the tissue inside of the breast. A breast ultrasound can show all areas of the breast, including the areas that are closets to the chest wall, which is hard to study with a mammogram. Breast ultrasounds do not use X-rays or any other types of radiation, and are effective in detecting whether a breast lump is filled with fluid or is a solid lump. It should be stated that a breast ultrasound does not replace the need for a mammogram, but it is often used to check abnormal results from a mammogram.

Similar to ultrasounds done for pregnant women, a small handheld unit called a transducer is gently passed back and forth over the breast. A computer turns the sound waves created by the transducer into a picture, otherwise referred to a sonogram, on the monitor. A breast ultrasound can add important information to the results of other tests, like a mammogram or breast MRI. It could also provide information that is not found with a mammogram.

Breast ultrasounds may be done for a number of reasons, including but not limited to:

Finding the cause of breast symptomes, like pain, swelling, and redness.
Checking a breast lump found on breast self-examination or physical examination.
Check abnormalities found from a mammogram.
Look at the breasts in younger women because their breast tissue is often more dense, and a mammogram may not show much detail.
Watch for changes in the size or cyst of a noncancerous lump.

Breast MRI

A breast MRI, or breast magnetic resonance imaging, uses magnetic fields to create an image of the breast. A breast MRI is used in breast cancer screening for women at higher than average risk. It is also sometimes used in breast cancer diagnosis and staging. A breast MRI varies from a mammography because a contrast agent is given before the procedure, which helps produce more clear and concise images. Because a breast MRI can sometimes give false positives it is never used on its own, rather, it is used as an additional tool that provides valuable diagnostic information which cannot be gathered using other imaging techniques.

A breast biopsy is a small piece of tissue that is removed and checked in a lab. This tissue will either be removed with a special biopsy needle or removed during surgery if the tissue is much larger. A breast biopsy is essential to check if cancer or other abnormal cells are present.

Your doctor will discuss with you if you need a breast biopsy, but they may be done for a number of reasons, including:

Checking a lump or mass that can be felt in the breast.
To check a problem seen on a mammogram, such as small calcium deposits in breast tissue or a fluid-filled mass.
To evaluate nipple problems, such as bloody discharge from the nipple.
To find out if a breast lump or mass is cancer (malignant) or not cancer (benign).

There are several types of breast biopsy procedures, and the one your doctor recommends will depend on the location and size of the breast lump or areas of concern. Types of biopsies include fine needle aspiration, core needle biopsy, and surgical biopsy. In cases where other special tools and methods are used to guide the needles and help with biopsy procedures, you could expect a stereotactic biopsy, vacuum-assisted core biopsy, or ultrasound-guided biopsy.

DEXA Bone Density

DEXA, or dual energy X-ray absorption scan, most commonly referred to as a bone density scan, is a common technique used to measure bone density. A DEXA bone density scan is a completely painless procedure that is easily performed, and exposes the patient to a minimal amount of radiation. It is the only test that can diagnose osteoporosis.

A DEXA scan takes approximately 15 minutes, and can be characterized by a small X-ray scanning your lumbar spine and both hips. From the images produced, the radiologist will be able to evaluate bone mineral (calcium) content of the bone. The amount of calcium correlates with bone content and with bone strength. This bone density test will tell you if you have normal bone density, low bone density (osteopenia), or osteoporosis. The lower your bone density, the greater your risk of breaking a bone.

A bone density test can help you and your primary physician determine:

If you have weak bones or osteoporosis before you break a bone.
Predict your chance of breaking a bone in the future.
See if your bone density is improving, getting worse, or staying the same.
Find out how well an osteoporosis medicine is working.
If you have osteoporosis after you break a bone.

Women are considered especially prone to developing osteoporosis after menopause, but it can also be found in men, and rarely in children. The risk factors of osteoporosis are age, body weight, history of prior fracture, family history of osteoporotic, and lifestyle issues such as cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
