Lung Screening
CT Lung Screening is a non-invasive procedure used to detect lung cancer in its early stages, typically before symptoms develop. This is the only recommended screening test for lung cancer and is recommended for adults who have no symptoms but are at high risk.
The CT Lung Screening program is led by a multidisciplinary team of experts who work together to provide early detection, advanced diagnostics and treatment options. ZP adheres strongly to the ALARA principle - As Low As Reasonably Achievable - when it comes to radiation use.
What are the benefits of CT Lung Screening?
The benefits of CT lung screening are significant, particularly for individuals at high risk of developing lung cancer, such as current or former smokers. One of the primary benefits is early detection, which can lead to earlier treatment and improved outcomes. Studies have shown that CT lung screening can reduce the risk of dying from lung cancer in high-risk individuals by up to 20%.
Another benefit of CT lung screening is its ability to detect lung cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage. This can reduce the need for more invasive treatments, such as surgery, and improve the chances of successful treatment. Additionally, CT lung screening is relatively quick and painless, with minimal risk to the patient.
Overall, CT lung screening is a valuable tool in the early detection and management of lung cancer, particularly in high-risk individuals. It can help save lives by detecting lung cancer early, when it is most treatable, and reducing the risk of dying from the disease.
Who should I be screened?
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends yearly CT lung cancer screening with for those who:
- Have a 20 pack-year or more smoking history, and
- Smoke now or have quit within the past 15 years, and
- Are between 50 and 80 years old.
A pack-year is smoking an average of one pack of cigarettes per day for one year. For example, a person could have a 20 pack-year history by smoking one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years.
Patients with a family history of lung cancer who meet the above criteria may want to consider a CT lung screening exam.
