How Does 3D Mammography work?

3D Mammography, also known as Digital Breast Tomosynthesis, works by capturing multiple images of the breast from several different angles. These images are then reconstructed into thin, layered slices, allowing radiologists to examine breast tissue in greater detail—almost like turning the pages of a book. This advanced imaging method minimizes the chance that overlapping tissue will hide potential issues, improving both detection rates and diagnostic confidence.

What Happens During a 3D Mammography

During the procedure, you’ll stand at the mammography unit as each breast is gently positioned between two plates for imaging. You will feel a little pressure, but it is only for a few seconds. A low-dose X-ray is used to create detailed 3D images, while ProFound AI® Detection automatically analyzes the images to assist our radiologists. The entire exam typically takes less than 15 minutes, and results are interpreted by our subspecialized breast imaging experts. At Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology, we make your comfort, confidence, and health our top priorities—because your care always comes first.

How to Prepare For a 3D Mammogram

Be sure to inform us if you have breast implants. Do not wear any deodorant, antiperspirant, lotions, perfumes, or powders on your breast or under your arms on the day of your mammogram. These could interfere with the clarity of your images.
